Saltwater Fishing FAQs
What saltwater fish species can I catch on Cape Cod?
In the spring and fall, migratory striped bass and bluefish run the beaches and rivers in and around Cape Cod. These species are catchable from shore around dawn and dusk. Anglers may also do well fishing the beaches at nighttime as the water warms during the summer season.
During the warmer summer months, small scup, black sea bass, northern kingfish, and sometimes fluke are targetable from shore during the day.
All of the above species can be targeted from the boat as well, in greater size and numbers. Additionally, tautog, false albacore, tuna, and many other species are caught by inshore and offshore boaters.
What bait and tackle do I need to catch saltwater fish on Cape Cod?
From the boat or dock, 6-8′ spinning or conventional setups with appropriately-sized, saltwater-capable reels are adequate to toss bait and lures. From the beach, surfcasters often step up to 9-11′ rods for extra casting distance and fish-fighting power.
For predatory species (striped bass, bluefish, etc.) lures, live, or chunk bait are preferable. For bottom species (scup, sea bass, etc.) sea worms, squid, sea clams, or Berkeley Gulp® work well when fished on bottom rigs or jigs.
A broad array of rods, reels, baits, and lures for the beach and boat are available at our shop. Come on by and our knowledgeable staff will set you up with the gear you need!
